Luke 4:31-44

Jesus continues teaching as he travels from Nazareth to Capernaum. His teaching amazed those who heard because he spoke with authority. Jesus made a point to enter the synagogue and teach on the Sabbath teaching about the kingdom while reasoning from the Old Testament scriptures. He was the ultimate authority as he is God. This would be more evident on this occasion.

While Jesus was teaching a man who was possessed by a demon began crying out. The interesting thing about this encounter is that the demon knows exactly who he is talking to. He calls Jesus “the Holy on of God”. Jesus rebukes the demon and casts it out of the helpless man. This will happen again later in the chapter as verse 41 shows that many demons were being cast out and they were calling Jesus the Son of God. It is interesting that more didn’t catch on to who Jesus was by witnessing these encounters. The demons certainly were not confused about who Jesus was but the people would question time again if this was really the Christ.

Jesus would prove his power by not only the authority with which he taught but also by the power he had to heal the sick like he did with Simon’s mother-in-law. Jesus was establishing early in his ministry that the his kingdom is something different, that he was someone different. The things that Jesus did and that the disciples continued after Jesus was gone would serve as confirmation of who Christ was. This is the Son of God, this is the Christ, the savior of mankind.
