Luke 2:1-21

Read Luke 2:1-21

The birth of Jesus is different from any other birth throughout history. God came down and became flesh. Jesus brings a hope that was not seen before and hasn’t been seen since. He is the savior but he was also in human form. He was a baby just like all of us. The scene here shows a depth of love that God has for us that is hard to fully comprehend.

It is incredible to consider that the Lord would arrive in such a way. The King of Kings should have been born in the nicest place but instead is born outside and laid in a manger. We would not choose this for anyone. The Lord shows his great example of humility that would continue throughout his time on earth.

The shepherds were witness to the heavenly host and their praise. This should be a part of our attitude toward Jesus today. We should offer him our praise and realize just how special he is. Every day we are blessed because Jesus came to earth. One of our blessings is the ability to live in peace. Jesus brings that peace to our hearts when we obey him and live the way he teaches us.

Mary treasured all these things in her heart. It must have been incredible to witness all that Jesus was and would do. Mary knew she would give birth to Jesus but she couldn’t have been fully prepared for all that would come after. Can you imagine what it must have been like for her to see the Lord mature and grow?

One other point from this text comes in verse 21. Even though he was the Lord, he still was subject to the law and obeyed the commands that God had set forth for his people. Jesus lived in subjection to the law as a Jew. Shouldn’t he be exempt because he is God after all? Jesus did not look for loopholes or reasons that he shouldn’t live in subjection. What does that say about how we should look at scripture today?
