Luke 5:1-11

Jesus is teaching to a crowd. In order to get a better view of the crowd Jesus will get into a boat and cast off some as he sits and teaches. The boat belongs to Simon and his brother who are fishermen by trade. When Jesus finishes teaching the crowd he asks Simon to take the boat out further and fish.

Simon and his fellow fishermen had fished all night to no avail. Simon saw no point in trying again but because Jesus asked him to he set out for deeper waters. Jesus had something to show Simon that would pay dividends in the years to come. When they cast their nets they caught a large number of fish. The catch was so large that they had to call for help from another boat to haul the fish back to shore. Both boats became so full that they began to sink.

Simon Peter responded to this with a plea for Jesus to depart because of his sinfulness. Simon understood that he was in the presence of the power of God. Jesus displayed power over the seas. Only God could have this much power. Jesus was not just a prophet who God was working through but he was God here on earth showing who he really was to Simon.

James and John were partners with Simon and his brother Andrew. All were astonished at what they had witnessed and would become disciples of Jesus and follow him after this. Jesus used the fish as an analogy for what these fishermen would become. They would now start to learn how to be fishers of men. They left all and followed him. How many people are Christians today because of their decision to follow Christ?
