Luke 7:1-10

Jesus will heal on 2 different occasions at the beginning of Luke 7. The first comes with an interaction with a centurion. This would have been a leader of the Romans. This makes this event even more peculiar. The Jews were under Roman authority. A centurion would not normally seek out a Jewish person for help. This centurion was different in that he saw in Jesus what many of the Jews had been missing.

The centurion had sent to seek the help of Jesus. He had a servant that was very ill and needed help. Jesus was going to the home of the centurion to heal the sick servant when he received a message from the centurion. This leader of men expresses that he is unworthy for Jesus to come under his roof. He recognizes Jesus as a man of authority. He knows that Jesus just needs to say the word and he could heal his servant. Jesus complements this kind of faith in front of those who were following him.

This exchange shows us the power of faith. The centurion has every reason not to have faith in Jesus. He had every reason to ignore Jesus or believe in his power to heal. That’s the great part about faith. It is not rooted in the physical that you can touch and see. It is rooted in the heart with a strong believe and assurance that things are possible. The centurion was not a show me first type of person. This is the type of faith we need to strive to have in our lives.
