Jesus is followed by his disciples and also a great crowd. They went to a town called Nain. As he got close, he saw what we would call a funeral procession. A man had passed away. He was the only son of his mother who was also a widow. A considerable crowd had come to help her mourn realizing all that she had lost.
This is an interesting interaction and a prophetic one. This mother had lost her only son. Jesus, God’s only son, would be given for the sin of the world. In both cases a death would occur. In both cases Jesus would be involved in a resurrection from the dead.
Jesus stops the procession and comforts the mother who is mourning. He call out to the dead and tells him to rise. He sat up and began to speak. Rightfully so, fear seized them all as they marveled at what Jesus had done. This was obviously someone who was sent from God. This report spread throughout all of Judea.
It is hard to believe that anyone would not believe in Jesus after witnessing this. He restored life. He brought someone back from the dead. Why would you not want to know more about someone like this? There were still those who rejected Jesus as the Messiah. There were still those who wanted him gone. It is a reminder to us to never take any of our spiritual blessings and opportunities for granted. May we never lose sight of what Jesus did for us. May our hearts remain tender and in need of Jesus.
