Luke 8:16-25

Jesus talks of lighting a lamp. When the light is on we see clearly what is around us. No one turns on the light only to cover it up and hide what may be in front of them. Jesus is asking those who are listening to hear with pure and open hearts. The word must be received without preconceived ideas. The truth will ultimately be known by all. God’s plan will be made manifest. Judgement will be passed on how it was received and treated.

The mother and siblings of Jesus came to see him but could not reach him because of the crowd. Jesus responds to this in an unusual manner. “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 8:21. Jesus was more concerned about the kingdom than pleasing his earthly family. How often can focus be drawn away by what seems like a good reason or to simply please others?

The word can be choked by what others think or even by what some family member may think. It can also be choked by what is going on in the world around us. Jesus was asleep in a boat when a storm blew in. The disciples were afraid and woke him. Jesus rebuked the wind and the storm ceased. He called into question their faith as they marveled that even the winds obey him.

Each of these cases shows how easy it is to miss the truth or lose our focus on the truth. Jesus stayed on track even when the circumstances around him called for his attention. We should learn a lesson from this as we can often be pulled in many directions. The main goal should be the kingdom and the gospel.
